2019: A Spoiler

We're on the home stretch of 2018, can you believe it? I know there are people out there that had a great year; but, overwhelmingly, I've heard a lot of people say less than favorable things, including:

  • Worst year ever

  • F***k 2018

  • Can't wait for it to be over

You get the idea. Are you in one of these camps? Actually, the answer to that doesn't even matter because what I'm going to offer applies to everyone. History is an excellent teacher and here is what 2018 taught me.

Manage Expectations

When you are coming off a really rough year, it's easy to think that somehow life is going to magically smooth out when the calendar flips to January. Be careful. I'm not saying that 2019 is going to be all gloom, doom and tragedy; but, I am saying that there will most definitely be hard times in the coming year - just as there have been in every year that people have existed.

The rough spots of 2018 don't vanish at midnight on January 1 - the pain, the scars, the memories - they are still with you. A new year doesn't erase hurt. You still have to process the pain and undertake the healing journey.

When 2019 throws an unexpected tragedy your way, I encourage you to dig into the hurt, acknowledge it, embrace it, heal from it. Do all of these immediately rather than waiting for a magical reset when the next new year arrives.

Put the Black Lipstick Away

Before you go dressing all in black, take time to look at the GOOD things that happened in 2018. The bad may have overshadowed the good; but, among all the shit, there was some good stuff too -

GREAT stuff even.

Spoiler alert: 2019 isn't yet written but it will most certainly be a mix of rainbows and unicorns and shit storms. Know that you're going to get some of both and find peace with this dichotomy.

We grow through all of it- look to the horizon and appreciate the sun that rises each day, even when the clouds seem overwhelming.

Look for the Lesson

Whatever lies ahead, there is something to be learned. Sometimes it may feel like you're just cursed or unlucky; but, I promise there is a purpose. It's not always obvious and it often takes time to understand. Before you go to bed each night, ask yourself, "What was today trying to teach me? Was I open to the lesson?"

Were you supposed to find a strength you didn't know you have?

Were you supposed to find empathy for others that are hurting?

Were you supposed to learn to appreciate the small blessings as much as the big hurts?

It reminds me of the scene in The Lion King when Rafiki, the baboon, hits Simba on the head with his stuck. Rafiki says, “The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it.”

Bottom line: Bad things happen. The secret to a fulfilling life is to learn, keep moving, and don't be discouraged.

Bring It

Look in the mirror tonight and stare into your own eyes. Remember all the things you've been through - good and bad. They have all made you the amazing person you are today. Allow yourself to hold on to the great moments ahead as much - more- than you hold on to hurts. Use the wins to fuel you through through the "win-ters."
